Values and Qualities of News

According to Askurifai Baksin (2006: 50-52), not every event, personality, and idea becomes news. To check whether information is worth to be news, Mencher divided it into seven values of news:
a.Timeless
It means events which are immediate recent.
b.Impact
It means an event which is likely to effect many people.
c.Prominence
It means an event involving well-known people or institutions.
d.Proximity
It means that an event geographically or emotionally close to someone.
e.Conflict
It means an event which reflects clashes between people or institutions.
f.The unusual
It means an event which deviates sharply from the expected and the experiences of everyday life.
g.The currency
It means events and situations which are being talked about.

On the other hand, Charnley chose to look at the aspect of the qualities of news. According to him, there are some standards used to measure the qualities of news:
a.Accurate
It means that all information is verified before being used.
b.Properly attributed
It means that the reporter identifies his or her source of information.
c.Balanced and fair
It means that all sides in controversy are given.
d.Objective
It means that the news writer does not inject his or her feeling or opinion.
e.Brief and focused
It means that the news story gets to the point quickly.
f.Well written
It means that stories are clear, direct and interesting. (Charnley, 1965).
9.Choosing TV News Format
News on television media can be presented in various formats. To decide what format that will be chosen depends on some factors.
Those factors are:
•Picture available
If picture available we have is limited, a reporter will be difficult to write a long news script, so the news is made in shorter and more compact format, or it is made in a format without a picture anymore.
•The moment of occurred events or events development that will be reported
The latest development of a new event has already been received by a producer when news broadcasting is being held. Meanwhile, that development is too important to be ignored. If it is delayed too long, the newest development will be stale too, or the other television stations (competitors) will present it first.
